The Minnesota state flag has the state seal of Minnesota on a solid royal blue background. Around the state seal is a wreath of the state flower, the lady slipper. 3 dates are interwoven into the wreath: 1858, the year Minnesota joined the Union; 1819, the year Fort Snelling was established; and 1893, the year the official state flag was adopted. 19 stars outside the wreath acknowledges Minnesota was the 19th state to join the Union after the original 13 colonies. The largest star represents the North Star of Minnesota. The Minnesota state motto on the seal “L'Étoile du Nord” means “the star of the North”.
